Developing Meaningful Asset and Operational Reports from SCADA (259KB PDF)

This paper investigates why developing useful reports from water and wastewater SCADA or telemetry systems has been a challenge historically. The paper reviews new approaches and new RTU technology which allow vastly better SCADA reports for operations and asset managers.

This paper also appeared in the October 2008 edition of Pumps & Systems.

Maintenance Strategies - Predictive Maintenance vs Run to Fail (361KB PDF)

This paper reviews the common strategies used by water and wastewater utilities for maintenance of lift stations, and the impact of new technology on these practices.

This paper also appeared in Pumps & Systems in September 2008.

Reducing cost and CO2 emissions in pump stations (191KB PDF)

This paper investigates improving the efficiency of pump stations to reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions.

This paper also appeared in the June 2008 edition of Journal AWWA

Keeping SCADA systems open and secure from cyber-attack (150KB PDF)

This paper discusses security in communications, specifically the new DNP3 security standard.

This paper also appeared in the June 2008 edition of Control Engineering

  Benefits of DNP3 (156KB PDF)

This paper compares DNP3 with Modbus and various manufacturers' protocols, specifically for monitoring and control of remote infrastructure.

RTU and control in the same device (371KB PDF)

This paper looks briefly at the reasons why control and RTU for pump station panels has sometimes been separated, and why newer technology provides a better solution.

Cost savings in a control panel using MultiSmart (595KB PDF)

MultiSmart integrates many components normally wired separately in a control panel. This document identifies some of the cost savings that are achievable by using MultiSmart.

Comparison of a MultiSmart Pump Station Manager with a PLC (376KB PDF)

Given the success of the PLC in the process control industry, why do so many water & wastewater utilities specify the MultiSmart Pump Station Manager, even when a PLC/RTU exists in the panel?

  MultiTrode Protocol Document

The older MT2PC/MT3PC and MonitorPro contain the MultiTrode protocol. This is an open protocol, freely available to any organisation wishing to interface to MultiTrode field hardware. We also have C++ code available to allow quick and reliable development of a driver.

Please contact us if you would like a copy of our protocol document, and we will also ensure that you are kept on our controlled document list for any updates.

The MTT protocol translater connects to the MT2PC/MT3PC and MonitorPro providing Modbus or DNP3. (The MultiSmart range of products run Modbus and DNP3 natively).

I would extend my congratulations of one on the best I&C improvements to the water and wastewater market that I have seen in the past 10 years! From an engineer's point of view the Multismart unit has been one the best conceived water and wastewater lift and pumping station controllers on the market today.

MultiSmart will almost certainly play a large part in helping Thames Water achieve its goals in the near future. The fact you have put everything in a single box with ease of use, advanced intelligence and included a modern outstation means we can simplify our pump station switchboard design, save money on capital and operational expenditure as well as mitigate many of our current risks. I look forward to working closely with MultiTrode so we can get the most out of a pretty impressive product.
